I just heard the "rumor" on AlJazeera English, which is being reported by the New York Times and frankly I'm a little overwhelmed on how to proceed with this post. It is so politically typical and so corporately audacious that I wonder where I should begin to unravel it's sinister and ambitious purpose.
OK, let's start with the subject of the news story. The so-called "rumor". And briefly (read the NYT story via the link here), it is a proposal by the US to Egypt's VP that Mubarak step down now and a Trilateral government be established, comprised of current Parliament and military leaders (all with military and intelligence backgrounds), that will proceed to implement a series of democratic reforms, culminating in "free" elections in the next few months, but perhaps as soon as September to November of this year.
AlJazeera is a corporate news outlet little different in that regard than any other, be it CNN or FOX or the BBC. They have budgets larger than many 3rd world countries. They do not function on rumor. At least not as a general rule. In the high standards of FOXNoise, rumor can be useful to stir the partisan fires that their corporatist employees and owners need to keep their viewers properly blinded by their versions of reality. And my initial reaction was actually that this was such a case.
But when I heard it again in a interview as a question to an American political analyst, and reminded myself that this was not an Americana company, and very likely has a different political agenda (assuming it has one - and better safe than sorry), I realized I had to reconsider that what I was hearing was a well-placed "feeler" put forth by those behind the scene which have been plotting all along how to come out of this revolution still holding their geo-political economic and military edge.
This is of course the United States, Israel and probably Saudi Arabia I am talking about here. Oh, and Egypt too, in the sense that it is the "ball in play" right now.
Is this all starting to sound a little conspiratorial? If so then you may be wasting your time reading this. You probably still believe in a benign and magnanimous US foreign policy agenda. One whose only goal is to spread Democracy and Judea-Christian doctrine to all the ignorant and savage nations of the third and developing worlds. And in fact you are surely half-right, insofar as the religious agenda goes. All religions have or have had their extreme fundamentalists, and Jewish and Christian history is rife with corruption and political ambitions for power and control. And this is in part what I believe is really going on here, and will explain further in a moment.
But I want to be clear, whether I am right or not about this "rumor", there is nothing benign or magnanimous about any political motives that our AIPAC driven government has towards the people of Egypt during this monumental moment in their history.
What is important to the United States runs more or less congruent with Israel, Britain and the other industrialized western nations, as well as Saudi Arabia and the other dictatorships in the region who are also watching these events with bated breath.
Egypt controls the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Closing the canal would force ships moving between Asia and Europe, and carrying crude oil, gas and other goods, to go around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, adding some 6,000 miles to the journey.
Egypt also sits adjacent to the Gaza Strip, and has been instrumental in the successful and illegal blockade that Israel has so cruelly administered against the Palestinian people. Some scholars have even gone so far as to call this action a form of genocide. If you look at both sides of this issue with an open mind, it is not so far fetched of a conclusion to reach.
So right there you have two very good reasons for the US to desire to retain influence over any ruling body in Egypt. Add to that the fact that we have been giving 1.3 billion dollars in military aid, every year since the 1979 Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty, which is really no more than corporate welfare for American weapons manufacturers, then it's not so hard to imagine that this "rumor" may be nothing more than a well-planned, from the start, final card or contingency, so typically exposed by Wikileaks of late, diplomatic move, calculated to bring about the illusion of reform, but which in reality will preserve the geo-political status-quo.
Then there is Israel, the largest recipient of US military aid, with Egypt coming in second, and Saudi Arabia third. Israel desires to keep control of the Palestinians, and they have been very successful in the last few years, thanks to the Mubarak government helping them to enforce the blockade which is slowly starving the people of Gaza.
With the help of the corporate-run right-wing media, the public rhetoric coming from the American made Arabic nations in the region, insure that most westerners who are not directly involved in the conspiracy, or who are otherwise happily duped by the mainstream narrative, will believe the calculated and premeditated lies spewed by the White House via their media mouthpieces. My hope is that the brave and inspirational Egyptian people remain firm in their resolve and do not believe in "fairy tales". As Friday approaches, the protesters are planning what may be their last ditch effort before things go awry. I hope not. I hope the people of Egypt come out in numbers that invoke the support of all freedom-loving people around the world, and that these imperialists, in both Northern Africa and the Middle East, as well as across the Atlantic Ocean, fail in their anything but democratic goals.
Someone more knowledgeable than myself will soon write about this as well, I am almost certain. Someone who better understands the historical actions and implications of Empire. But I wanted to at least post my own views, stemming from what little I have sadly learned over the last few years about how thoroughly corrupt ans without morality our leaders truly are in their behavior.
How could any rationally-thinking person doubt that this can be anything but an imperialistic ploy by the powers that be?
